In Her Own Name
690 · Wu Zetian, China's power behind the throne for decades, as the court urges her to take it herself
She has been governing for thirty years. Through a husband after his strokes, then as regent for one son, then for another after she removed the first one fifty-five days into his reign. Every edict that matters has been hers. None of them has had her name on it.
The arrangement works. It is also the reason she has been able to do any of it: a woman holding the seals on behalf of a man is an irregularity, and a woman holding them for herself is a violation of the mandate of heaven, which is a thing empires have executed people over.
A stone has been pulled from the river with an inscription saying a sage mother will come to rule mankind. Her nephew arranged for it to be found. The court has begun petitioning her to take the title.
She is sixty-six. If she takes it, she ends a dynasty and founds her own, and every man who has been tolerating a regent has to decide what he is now. If she does not, everything she built goes back to her son the day she dies, under his name, as though it had always been his.
